Chapter 02 · Neuroscience · 3 lessons
Neural Coding
A neuron speaks in one number: its firing rate. That number is broad, ambiguous, and only defined over a time window — and the brain reads angles out of it anyway. Three short lessons build the standard account: tuning curves that map a stimulus to a rate, population codes that read many blurry detectors at once, and the counting windows that turn variable spike trains into rates in the first place.
